TREK. One word. Probably enough, but I am a writer so here goes. I literally didn't know what a mountain bike was until I rode my first Trek. I'd seen and ridden bikes that were built for trails and such, but the Trek was the first pro level mountain bike I ever rode. It was light, strong, and felt like it just didn't want to be on-road at all. I still want a red Trek to be the pure mountain bike in my collection based on the memory and experience of that first ride. One day.
As far as bike makers go, Trek is the biggest in the U.S. and their racing history has been THE story of the last decade or so with Lance Armstrong riding the brand to a record 7 Tour de France victories. I'm sure you're up on the story if you're here so that's enough writing (and reading) - go build a bike!
